Cape Cod: a magical place
“A man may stand there and put all America behind him."
– Henry David Thoreau, Cape Cod
A frequent guest of Cape Cod, transcendentalist writer Henry David Thoreau is often
referred to in the pages of this guide. He was the first world-class writer ever to put pen to paper
about Cape Cod. Over three visits his keen powers of perception and observation, perhaps
honed by his training as a surveyor, allowed him to create a timeless account of this place.
You know a place is magical when it doesn’t lose its lure after years of visiting. Cape Cod is
such a place. While our special events, shops and museums may change their offerings as often
as the ocean’s tide, many things about Cape Cod remain unchanged...the sweep of the dunes at
the National Seashore, the pink glow of a winter sunset, the laugh of a child playing in warm
tidal pools. This place beckons you to return again and again.
In this 2008 edition, we offer some special reasons to visit for your first or fiftieth time. Here
we have in-depth stories on some of our favorite activities including the Cape Cod Baseball League
(the premier collegiate league in the nation), the Barnstable County Fair, raw bars and whale
watching. For the kids and grandkids, we tell you where you can find Cape Cod pirates! And
collectors will enjoy the article on Sailor’s Valentines, an art form that is enjoying a renaissance
here. Don’t miss the calendar of events, with some brand new activities on the schedule.
The stories contained herein are not the only thing new with the Cape Cod Travel Guide.
We are very pleased to announce that the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce is now the proud
steward of the guide and its companion websites. Why is that important to our readers? It
means you not only get beautifully presented stories, but also well-vetted information, with a
staff of experts to help plan your trip. You are only a click or phone call away from our 16 visitor
information specialists who can answer just about any question (and boy do we get some
interesting questions!) From luxury accommodations, family-friendly resorts, vacation homes
for rent, quiet B&B’s and everything in between, we can help you select the best site for your
vacation. If you’re planning a meeting, family reunion or wedding, we can help too. Whether
shopping or dining or just relaxing is your goal, no detail is too small to consider, so please ask!
Cape Cod’s very distinct seasons, events and stories are ready and waiting for you. And
while we leave the magic on all year long, we hope you visit soon!
